A famous Ayurvedic Proverb says, “When diet is wrong, medicine is of no use. When diet is good, medicine is of no need.” Be mindful of how you fuel your body. Your choices today will help you stay in good health and achieve optimal performance for the long term.
Eat whole foods like vegetables, fruits, nuts/seeds, berries, eggs, fish, poultry and meats – foods that did not spend a lot of time being processed prior landing on your grocery store shelf.
Pick fruits and vegetables that are in season. You will enjoy a variety of nutrients, and a variety of options to choose from!
Eat in more than you eat out. Preparing food at home can help you exercise more control over the quality of ingredients used, portion sizes and is usually more cost effective than eating the same quality meal outside of the house.
Plan your meals before each week starts and before you go grocery shopping. The 30 minutes it can take to plan your meals can make a big difference!
All calories are not created equal; be mindful of the quality of foods you are choosing to get your energy from. Keeping your caloric intake at a moderate level is important, but the source of your calories is even more important.
Listen to your body! If you feel uncomfortable, get congested or feel inflamed after eating a certain item or certain items, make adjustments to your diet. If physical issues persist, make an appointment with your primary care physician to troubleshoot the problem together.
Be a mindful eater. If you find yourself snacking often throughout the day, be mindful that you may not be eating to satisfy hunger – but because you may feel bored, stressed or sad. Don’t allow for your emotions to drive you to consume extra calories/nutrients.
